While we were relaxing for the most part over the holiday break, we also completed the insulation of the attic. Here are some pics of Michael putting in the vapor barrier and styrofoam to prevent the heat from radiating upward.

Day 69: Building the Attic Box
The one last thing Michael needed to do before we could finish insulating the attic was to build a box and then a "door" for the attic. The insulation will lie on the sides of the box that is in the attic. He spent a considerable amount of time building, measuring, fitting and installing the box this day. After he did that, we went to Lowe's to get the cellulose insulation blowing machine.
Here is the new attic opening.

Here is the box that will be inserted into the opening.

Day 70: Finish Insulating the Attic
We spent about four hours blowing the cellulose insulation into the attic. We did have two accidents where the first time, the hose dropped and blew everywhere upstairs. The second time occurred when the motor was accidentally turned back on and blew into the parlour, foyer and piano room. It took about an hour to clean everything up though ... No big deal! LOL!
Michael is heading up the attic one last time. (WE HOPE!) This time, he's going through the new opening!

Before picture: One of the gable roof areas with some roll-in and foam insulation.

After picture: The same gable roof area with cellulose insulation over the foam insulation.

Although the picture is blurry, you can make out that the entire attic is covered in cellulose insulation. Michael put several sticks that were 11 inches thick at several points to ensure we have at least that much insulation. Pretty cool.

Believe it or not, the upstairs seems a lot warmer than it used to! A very worthwhile home improvement.
